REBELS WITH A CAUSE
(SVARTE PANTERE)
«This impassioned first feature is the work of Thomas
Robsahm, the son of late Italo thesp Ugo Tognazzi and Norwegian Margrete Robsahm;
it´s dedicatet to his father. Pic is a youthful tirade in favour of animal liberation,
and could attract radical auds in many countries, though it´s probably a case
of preaching to the converted.
Five young Norwegians, two men, three women, live in an isolated farmhouse commune
from which they regulary venture out to liberate labatory animals, or farm animals
they believe are cruelly treated. At first, they worry because their activities garner
little press, but as they become bolder they find themselves opposed by more concervative
animal welfare outfits and targeted by police.
Eventually, they´re tracked down and arrested, but the authoroties seem to want
to make an example of just one of them, Marius (Henrik Mestad), who´s from a
well-to-do background, turning the others against him and suggesting that he was
sexually involved with the three women (atually, he was only involved in one). The
fact that one is a mineor adds to the wrath of the Establishment.
Robsahm Handles this material with earnestness, and in an effort to widen the pic´s
appeal, there are lots of songs on the soundtrack, and there´s a bright and
lively young cast. There are also clips from the pioneering British animal liberation
docu «The Animals Film».
Pic´s Norwegian title transletes as «Black Panters;» title would obviously
have different connotations in the U.S., and has been changed offshore».
