REBELS WITH A CAUSE
(SVARTE PANTERE) Norway 1992: Five young people mask their faces with black balaclavas and venture out into the night. They break and enter, steal and destroy - but their conscience is clear. This is the only way they can carry out the task they have set for themselves: To liberate the slaves of our time, those with a heart, a mind and a language that humans can´t understand. "The Panthers" are animal liberationists - freedom fighters, soldiers of conscience. They are tired of beeing overlooked, discouraged and ridiculed. Direct action is the only solution. Predictably their methods are unacceptable to the powers that be. The stage is set for a violent confrontation between panthers, press, police and politicians. About the film: Thomas Robsahm´s debut feature follows the inner life of the Panthers, the raids, the confrontations with the media and the police. The director employs irony and a conciderable dramatic sense. Intense visuals are accompanied by an equally intense soundtrack. An eclectic mixture of music old and new becomes an important part of film´s language. The film does´nt limit itself to the question of animal rights. It could equally well be dealing with environmental protest, racism or any of the other causes which make people take action. Often the activists are young, beliving still that there is power in protest. The blind faith, the involvement, the doubts and the uncertainty. The feeling of helplessness when the media and the established powers take over. No one will doubt the director´s own point of view after having seen this film. All the same, this is a film which encourages the viewer´s own thoughts and reflections, a film that is unafraid and provocative. Like young filmmakers all over the world, Thomas Robsahm gathers inspiration from the society surrounding him. There is no lack of current topics - and they can become good entertainment too.
